Vermont Massage License

Updated for 2023
The state of Vermont now requires massage therapists, bodyworkers and touch professionals to register with the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation (OPR). In October of 2020, the Vermont General Assembly passed Act 178, relating to professional regulations, which describes this new regulation. Beginning April 1, 2021, professional massage therapists, bodyworkers and touch therapists who practice in Vermont for compensation must register with the OPR. Also, anyone representing themselves to the public as practicing massage or bodywork must register. This requirement does not include those professionals who provide these manual therapy services in the course of other regulated professions (e.g. physical therapists, chiropractors, physicians, osteopaths).
There may be additional city or county rules and regulations regarding the practice of massage therapy or creating a massage establishment. So massage therapists in Vermont should also check with local regulatory agencies before starting to practice.

Massage Education Requirements in Vermont
To register as a massage therapist in Vermont, massage therapists, bodyworkers and touch therapists only need to complete the application and pay the registration fee. Applicants do not need to provide documentation of qualifications, education, training, or examinations.
Examination Requirements
Even though Vermont does not require specific educational hours or examination for registration, it’s beneficial for professionals to stay informed and prepared. For instance, engaging in practices like taking MBLEx practice tests can be advantageous, especially for those who may consider practicing in other states where such examinations are a prerequisite. These practice tests can help therapists maintain a broad understanding of massage therapy and bodywork, aligning their skills with national standards.
