About the MBLEx
The Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) was developed and is administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). It is the most commonly used competency exam for massage therapists in the United States. The MBLEx is currently used as a component of licensure in 46 of the 49 regulated jurisdictions, which include 46 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is designed based on massage job task analysis surveys that reflect the practical knowledge and skills massage therapists need to perform their job safely and effectively. What is the MBLEx?
The MBLEx (Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam) is a competency exam developed by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). It is used as part of the massage therapy licensing process in 46 of the 49 regulated jurisdictions in the United States. The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions delivered through computerized adaptive testing (CAT), and you are given 110 minutes to complete it. Results are pass or fail.
What does the MBLEx cover?
The MBLEx covers seven content areas based on the FSMTB Content Outline: Anatomy & Physiology, Kinesiology, Pathology and Contraindications, Benefits and Effects of Soft Tissue Manipulation, Client Assessment Reassessment and Treatment Planning, Ethics Boundaries Laws and Regulations, and Guidelines for Professional Practice. The exam is designed to test the knowledge and skills you need to practice massage therapy safely and effectively.
How much does the MBLEx cost?
The MBLEx exam fee is $265 per attempt, paid directly to the FSMTB when you schedule your exam. If you do not pass, you must wait 30 days before retaking the exam and pay the full $265 fee again. Your Authorization to Test (ATT) is valid for 120 days from the date it is issued.
What is the MBLEx pass rate?
According to the FSMTB 2025 Annual Report, the first-time MBLEx pass rate is 70.4%, based on 17,160 candidates tested between July 2024 and June 2025. The retake pass rate is significantly lower at 37.8%. Preparing with MBLEx practice tests and a structured study plan can help you pass on your first attempt.
How should I study for the MBLEx?
Start by creating a study plan that covers all seven content areas on the exam. Focus on active study methods like practice tests and quizzes rather than passively rereading notes. Give yourself at least 4 to 6 weeks of consistent study time before your exam date.
