Rhode Island Massage License

The massage therapy profession in Rhode Island is regulated by the Rhode Island Board of Massage Therapy which is a component of the State Department of Health.
To become a licensed massage therapist (LMT) in the state of Rhode Island, applicants must first complete the requirements as described on the Rhode Island Department of Health website. License requirements include completing an accredited massage school or program of at least 500 hours. Also, the applicant must pass the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx), or a certification exam previously offered by the NCBTMB. Massage Education Requirements in Rhode Island
Applicants for a Rhode Island massage therapy license are required to complete a minimum of 500 hours of in-class, hands-on supervised coursework and clinical instruction from an accredited massage school or program. An approved curriculum will contain the following hours at a minimum:
- 100 hours of anatomy and physiology (theory)
- 300 hours of theory and practice of massage therapy and applied anatomy and physiology. 150 of these hours are to be the practice of massage
- 100 hours of elective subjects including CPR, ethics, business practice and law, office procedures, and professionalism
Examination Requirements
The Rhode Island Department of Health has approved the following exams:
- Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB)
- NCETMB/NCETM credentialing exam offered by the NCBTMB

Additional License Requirements
Getting a Rhode Island massage license has additional requirements. The applicant must:
- Be at least 18 years of age and of good moral character
- Submit to a criminal records check that includes fingerprinting
- Verify completing a first aid and CPR course, and have current and valid CPR certification

Renewal Process
All massage therapy licenses expire on June 30th each year. The following must be done to complete your renewal application:
