Massage therapists in New Hampshire must have a license before beginning to practice. Massage licenses in New Hampshire are issued by the Advisory Board of Massage Therapists. This board is in the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification in the Division of Health Professionals. The principal mission of the board is to protect the public health, safety and welfare by establishing and enforcing standards of massage therapist competency and guidelines for professional practice. 

To become a licensed massage therapist (LMT) in the state of New Hampshire, the applicant must first complete the requirements as described on the NH Advisory Board of Massage Therapists website. These requirements include completing a massage education program and passing an examination. We’ve provided a summary of these requirements below for a quick reference.

Industry research from ABMP in 2016 estimated that there was about 1,943 massage therapists in New Hampshire (or about 1 therapist per every 685 people in the state).

Massage Education Requirements in New Hampshire

Applicants for a New Hampshire massage license are required to complete a minimum of 750 hours of classroom and clinical instruction from an approved massage school or program. Curriculum requirements include:

  • 150 hours of anatomy and physiology
  • 375 hours of massage theory, practice, benefits, history, contraindications and related modalities
  • 50 hours of hygiene and sanitary best practice, universal precautions, CPR and first aid
  • 50 hours of massage ethics, business practices and health services management
  • 125 hours of documented and verifiable clinical practice

Examination Requirements

The New Hampshire Advisory Board of Massage Therapists has approved the following licensing exam:

  • Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB)

Additional License Requirements

Getting a license in New Hampshire has additional requirements. The applicant must also:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and in good mental and physical health
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Hold current CPR and first aid certification

Applicants for a temporary massage license must be 21 years of age, show completion of a massage education program of at least 500 hours, and show that they have practiced in another state for at least 3 years out of the past 5 years. They must also be a resident of New Hampshire. Temporary licenses are only valid for 1 year and cannot be renewed.

Application Process

Applicants for a New Hampshire massage therapy license can apply through the standard education and examination process by filling out their Initial Application form. 

A massage therapist who has an active massage therapy license in another state bay be eligible for licensure through through reciprocity. This is essentially the same process as the initial application, and uses the same application form. The out-of-state massage license must be in good standing and be in a state that has equivalent licensing requirements. 

Massage License Fees

Below is a summary of the fees charged by the New Hampshire Advisory Board of Massage Therapists. Fees are nonrefundable. Checks, postal or expires money orders are accepted, and should be made payable to “Treasurer, State of New Hampshire“. 

  • Initial license application: $110
  • Renewal license application: $110
  • Temporary license application: $110

Renewal Process

All New Hampshire massage therapy licenses expire on the last day of the licensee’s birth month in even-numbered years. The following must be done to complete your renewal application:

  • Download and complete the renewal application
  • Complete 12 approved CEU credit hours
  • Send renewal fee of $110
