Massage therapists practicing in Nevada must have a massage therapy license issued by the Nevada State Board of Massage Therapy. The Board was started in 2005 and works to protect the public health, safety and welfare by regulating the massage therapy profession in the Nevada. Functions of the board include establishing rules and regulation related to massage therapy, reviewing license applications, issuing massage licenses, and ensuring massage practitioner competency.

To become a licensed massage therapist (LMT) in the state of Nevada, applicants must first complete the requirements as described on the Nevada State Board of Massage Therapy website. These include education requirements, passing an exam like the MBLEx or NCBTMB, and meeting other qualifications. We’ve provided a summary of these requirements below for a quick reference. Massage Education Requirements in Nevada

Applicants for a Nevada massage license are required to complete a minimum of 550 hours of supervised classroom instruction from an approved massage school. The curriculum must include (at a minimum):

  • 125 hours of instruction on the body’s systems, including anatomy, physiology and kinesiology
  • 220 hours of instruction of client assessment, massage theory and application of techniques. This must include classroom and hands-on instruction, with at least 80 hours in clinical instruction
  • 40 hours of pathology
  • 20 hours of business 
  • 20 hours of ethics
  • 125 hours of additional course content related to massage therapy

Examination Requirements

The Nevada State Board of Massage Therapy has approved the following exams:

  • Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB)
  • NCETMB / NCETM credentialing exam offered by the NCBTMB (these are no longer offered)

Approaching the MBLEx with confidence is often a result of thorough preparation. A smart strategy is to take an MBLEx practice exam. This not only helps familiarize you with the exam format but also identifies areas needing more focus.

Additional License Requirements

Getting a license in Nevada has additional requirements. According to the Nevada State Board website, licensing can take anywhere from 1-3 months. The applicant must also:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Complete a criminal background check

Application Process

Applying for a Nevada massage therapy license begins with requesting an application packet using the Application Request form. Therapists can apply by examination or by endorsement (for those holding a current license in another state). Licensing can also now be done online.

Massage License Fees

Here is a summary of the fees charged by the Nevada State Board of Massage Therapy. All fees are nonrefundable. The board will only accept a cashier’s checks or money order. A total fee of $480 is due when submitting the Application Request form to request an application packet. This includes the following fees:

  • Application fee: $100
  • Initial license fee: $295
  • Background Investigation fee: $85
Other fees related to practicing massage therapy in Nevada:
  • License renewal fee: $350

Renewal Process

All massage therapy licenses expire annually on the last day of the anniversary month in which it was first issued. The Board will send a renewal reminder at least 60 days before the license expires. The following must be done to complete a renewal application:

  • Complete 24 CEU credit hours
  • Complete the online renewal form
  • Send renewal fee of $295
