Massage Education Requirements in Maine

Applicants for a massage license in Maine are required to complete a minimum of 500 clock hours of classroom and clinical instruction from an approved school. There is a list of a few massage therapy programs that have already been approved. The massage school or program curriculum must contain the following content at a minimum:

  • 120 hours of human anatomy, physiology and pathology
  • Massage therapy theory, technique and practice
  • Contraindications, benefits, universal precautions, body mechanics, business, history, ethics, legal issues related to massage and professional standards
  • 100 hours (minimum) of supervised hands-on practice
Applicants must have CPR and first aid training and certification however this cannot be counted as part of the 500 minimum educational hours. When ready to apply for the Maine massage license, applicants must contact their massage school to request that an official transcript be sent to the Maine Massage Therapy Licensure Program directly. The transcript must show that the applicant successfully completed the program, give the admission and graduation dates, and describe the curriculum with the number of classroom hours for each subject.

Examination Requirements

The Maine Massage Therapy Licensure program has approved the following exams:

  • Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB)
  • NCETMB/NCETM credentialing exam previously offered by the NCBTMB (these certification exams were discontinued in 2014)

To optimize chances of success on the massage licensing exam, taking multiple MBLEx practice tests can be a strategic choice for applicants. These practice tests offer a realistic experience of the actual exam format and help identify areas that may require more focus. A solid preparation using these tests can be instrumental in boosting confidence and readiness for the actual exam.

If you have not yet taken the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam and are planning to seek licensure in Maine, simply select this state when registering for the MBLEx, and they will send your scores to the Maine Massage Therapy Licensure Program when you pass. Check out our About the MBLEx page to see how to apply and schedule your exam.
