Maine Massage License

Massage therapists in in Maine must have a massage therapy license issued by the Maine Massage Therapy Licensure Program. Regulation of the massage therapy profession in Maine began in 1991. The Maine Massage Therapy Licensure Program was established to regulate massage therapy services in order to protect the public health, safety and welfare. The Program is within the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, and works to promote the standards of professional massage practice, ensure therapist competency and take disciplinary action for noncompliance with current laws and rules.

Massage Education Requirements in Maine
Applicants for a massage license in Maine are required to complete a minimum of 500 clock hours of classroom and clinical instruction from an approved school. There is a list of a few massage therapy programs that have already been approved. The massage school or program curriculum must contain the following content at a minimum:
- 120 hours of human anatomy, physiology and pathology
- Massage therapy theory, technique and practice
- Contraindications, benefits, universal precautions, body mechanics, business, history, ethics, legal issues related to massage and professional standards
- 100 hours (minimum) of supervised hands-on practice
Examination Requirements
The Maine Massage Therapy Licensure program has approved the following exams:
- Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB)
- NCETMB/NCETM credentialing exam previously offered by the NCBTMB (these certification exams were discontinued in 2014)

Additional License Requirements
Getting a license in Maine has additional requirements. The applicant must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have high school diploma or equivalent
- Verify current CPR and first aid certification (online courses are not accepted)
- Have a criminal background check

Renewal Process
