Kansas Massage License
Updated January 2024
Kansas is one of the 5 states that does not have statewide licensing for massage therapy professionals. The Kansas chapter of the AMTA have been working for several years on introducing legislation to regulate the profession. But the Senate Bill 40 and House Bill 2123 were not passed. This bill called for all massage therapists to be licensed by the state and carry professional liability insurance. It also would establish education standards for licensure and would require completion of continued education.
However there are licensing requirements or other regulations for massage therapists in Wichita, Overland Park, Leawood, and Olathe Kansas, as well as other municipalities in the state. So massage therapists in Kansas must first check with their city or county to learn of any professional licensing or business license that may be required. Fees and requirements will likely vary in different cities, however many cities choose to follow common state licensing requirements from other states such as requiring 500 hours of massage education and passing a massage exam such as the MBLEx.
For those who are preparing for a massage licensing exam, utilizing MBLEx practice test can be particularly beneficial. Even in areas without stringent state regulations, a practice test can help in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the massage therapy field, ensuring readiness for any city-specific licensing exams, and keeping skills and knowledge aligned with broader industry standards.
